Texas Judge Begins Hearing Arguments in Immigration Debate
Published at(BROWNSVILLE, Texas) — A federal judge near the Texas/Mexico border begins hearing arguments Friday in a lawsuit filed against the Obama administration by nearly two dozen states.
After failing to come up with a plan that Congress would approve, President Obama took executive action to allow more than four million undocumented immigrants to stay in the country on three-year work permits.
“Tracking down, rounding up and deporting millions of people isn’t realistic. It also isn’t who we are as Americans,” Obama explained in an address to the nation in November.
The president’s executive order will “make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates and entrepreneurs to stay and contribute to our economy,” he said.
But some argue that Obama has over-stepped his authority.
Texas filed a lawsuit to block the executive order and other states have joined.
