REXBURG — The precincts have gathered its votes and Jerry Merrill is the new Mayor of Rexburg.

Merrill says he looks forward serving the community and taking Rexburg to the next level.

“I’m excited at the prospect of leading Rexburg into the future, and I think we have a great future. There’s a lot of challenges and opportunities, and I’m just excited to take those on,” Merrill said.

Merrill said he expects to build the local economy by attracting good-paying jobs to Rexburg. He wants to create an economic environment that will keep Rexburg’s kids local rather than moving away, as well as retaining the BYU-Idaho population.

Merrill ran against Christopher Mann and got 55% of the vote. Merrill had a total of 1,367 votes with Mann trailing behind at 1,122, a margin of 9.8%. Both men serve on the City Council.

Nearly 2,500 people voted in the mayoral election Tuesday, Nov. 3, and polling places were packed more than usual, voting officials said.

The three council members winning seats on the City Council are incumbents Jordan C. Busby and Sally Smith, and newcomer Tisha W. Flora. For full election results, click here.

Justin H. Egbert, Vince Haley, and William Dickenson Harding also ran for council but did not make seats. Egbert held 15.2 percent of votes, Haley at 13.3 percent and Harding 5.9 percent.
