IDAHO FALLS — Fire crews tackled massive hay stack fire early Tuesday morning.

The fire occurred at about 3:40 a.m. The Idaho Falls Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 5590 E. Sunnyside Road for a report of a haystack fire.

Crews responded with two engines, one heavy brush truck, a tender and a battalion chief. Upon arrival, they found approximately 250 tons of hay and one tractor that was almost completely engulfed in fire.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire to the area of the haystack and prevented any spread to the standing grain field to the north or the houses to the east.

Crews will remain on scene throughout the day to extinguish hot spots.

The fire appeared to be spontaneous in nature, and the loss is valued at approximately $50,000.
