Shelley football coach surprised as district names field after him
Published at | Updated atSHELLEY — A Shelley high school football coach was stunned Friday night when officials announced they are naming the football field after him.
Richard Hobbs serves as the Varsity Defensive Coordinator for the Shelley Russets and is the longest tenured coach on the staff. He has been coaching with Shelley for nearly 25 years and has become an icon synonymous with the school’s football program.
Shelley played at home against Sugar-Salem High School Friday night and during halftime, Hobbs was called to the field. Officials then unveiled a sign that reads, ‘Welcome to Richard J. Hobbs Field.’
Hobbs said he had no idea the surprise was coming and is humbled by the gesture.
Hobbs has a distinguished football career. In 2012,he led the most dominant defense in Shelley history and statistically the leading defense in Idaho’s 3A classification.
He is a graduate of Shelley High School and played for Brigham Young University where he was a member of the 1984 National Championship team.
