(MIAMI) — David Beckham announced on Wednesday that he intends to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Miami. The unnamed team will enter the league once Beckham can secure financing for a new stadium.
“The support that we have had so far has really been incredible,” Beckham said. “We want to create a stadium; we want to create a soccer team, a football club that is the people’s football club. It’s simple as that.”
Beckham says he will not seek public funding to build a new stadium. Instead, he will seek out investors to assist. The former English national team captain is paying a discounted $25 million for the expansion team.
If everything comes together, the new team could begin play in 2016 or 2017.
Beckham played in the MLS for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2007 through 2012, scoring 18 goals in that span.
