Clippers forward Blake Griffin will undergo surgery Monday to remove a staph infection from his right elbow.  The injury is expected to sideline him through the All-Star Break.

Griffin had fluid drained from his elbow on February 2, while the team was in New York. This is not atypical for Griffin as he has dealt with bursitis for most of his career that required fluid to be drained.

When the team arrived in Oklahoma City Saturday, team trainer Jasen Powel noticed something was wrong and ordered Griffin to the Hospital

“You could tell when something is infected. You can just look at it,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “With a bursa sac, it could just be that too, but it just didn’t look right.”

The timetable for recovery is currently up in the air.

“It could be serious. It shouldn’t be, but you have to be very careful with that injury,” Rivers said. “It’s the unknown. With a sprained ankle, you know 10 days. But with infections, they’re infections, and you just have to be very careful. You cannot mess around with it.”

Spencer Hawes is expected to get the start in Griffin’s place.
