(OMAHA, Neb.) — Fred VanVleet tied a career high with 27 points, and Wichita State converted 29 of 34 free throws in route to eliminating No. 10 Indiana 81-76 in the second round of the Men’s NCAA Tournament.
The seventh-seeded Shockers got contributions from all over the board. Freshman Zach Brown scored a career high 11 points, and Ron Baker added 15 while hitting 7 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes.
Wichita State (29-4) now advances to take on in-state rival Kansas, whom they haven’t played since 1993.
“It’s a big thing for the state of Kansas,” said Baker, who is from Kansas. “A lot of houses are going to be divided. Being a player from Kansas, I’m really fortunate to be in this game. These types of games don’t happen a whole lot.”
Indiana (20-14) received 24 points from Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell in the loss.
