EastIdahoNews.com Reporter Dylan Carder interviewed Tami Hymas, The Hair Whisperer, on KEIR 101.1 FM about the reasons nose hair grooming is so important. Listen to the interview in the clip above.

Nose hair.

It’s not a topic most men or women talk about. It’s also not something normally associated with younger people or women. But the truth is nasal passages clogged by thick, uncomfortable nose hairs can become a problem for anyone and they tend to get worse with age.

First off, let me clarify that as we age, it’s natural that nose hairs grow past our nasal openings. We also grow longer eyebrows and ear hair. I often have clients ask me if there is a way to stop this unsightly hair growth and just limit growth to the top of their heads.

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

But salons and stylists can help you remove that unwanted hair to help you breath, see and hear better!

Here are some facts. As we age the life span of your hair changes. Studies show the average life span is 7 to 10 years on the top of our head. But our eyebrows, nose, leg and eyelashes only have a 4 month lifespan, which is why eyebrows never grow as long as head hair.

As we age, the life span of our hair changes and often lengthens, which means the previously short hairs stay attached longer, rather than replacing themselves.

The solution is simple grooming. You can wax your nose, ears, and eyebrows, or you can trim or tweeze them. People frequently ask me which is better. I tell them that if you keep cutting your hair it will get courser, thicker and become a problem faster. But if you wax your hair it has to grow back from small to thick. That’s why I mostly suggest wax.

There are some medications that make it hard to wax on your skin, but for the most part, waxing is the fastest and most painless way to remove unwanted hair. Tweezing nose hair can be especially painful!

Now the process of waxing nose hair is simple. First remember, that you’ll want to use hard wax, because if you use soft wax it will stay in your ear and nose. Soft wax also is applied with an annoying strip. Hard waxes though, will harden, and then you can remove the hair without leaving any wax or hair behind.

EastIdahoNews.com columnist and local stylist Tami Hymas, The Hair Whisperer, demonstrates how to get rid of nose hair.

Nose hair is waxed by attaching heated hard wax, shaped in a ball about the size of your nostril, to a Popsicle stick — or as stylists call it a “wax applicator.“ Calling it a Popsicle stick probably isn’t the right etiquette for stylists, but if you’re at home you can call it whatever you want.

While the ball is still warm, put it in your nose. You can breathe through your mouth, so no worries. Let the wax dry and when it sets – pull! It sounds painful, but tweezing is so much worse. If you’re waxing a man, remember to put a wax strip or some kind of protection on their lip so you don’t take off their mustache.

The same process can be used for ears, but you do need to leave a small hole so you don’t blow out or damage their eardrum.

Now, I realize it looks funny having Popsicle sticks pocking out your ears and nose but I promise, you will look more put together and will be able to breathe easier when it is done. Then when you’re done you probably won’t have to worry about it for another 4 months!
