Idaho Falls Girl Scouts deliver supplies to children in need
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — A local Girl Scout troop helped out a group of needy children get ready for school this weekend.
Idaho Falls Troop 342 took care packages filled with new school supplies and clothes to the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission’s Ruth House. The house provides emergency or temporary housing to women and children escaping from bad situations, or who are working to get back on their feet. Women at the Ruth House typically take four to six months to transition out of the house into a self-sufficient, stable lifestyle.
“(The girls) decided they wanted to do something for the people in the shelter because they knew some of the kids came to school without supplies,” said John Wilson, Troop 342 Co-leader. “They got their heads together and decided that this is what they wanted to do,” he said.
There are six children currently living at the Ruth House. They range in age from newborn to 15-years-old.
Vicki Callantine, Ruth House lead supervisor, said they were thankful to receive the supplies and that it alleviated a lot of stress for the families.
“It relieves such a burden off the moms that live here,” said Callentine, “One of the major burdens that mom’s suffer with is how to provide for their children.”
Girl Scout Bre Wiece said that she was happy to do what she did.
“It was fun and I feel really good for doing it. I felt really good because I knew I was helping people,” Bre said.
The donations were funded in part by Walmart, who donated $450 to the Girl Scouts for the supplies, and Basic American Foods, who donated food to the Ruth House.
