One person killed in Hwy. 20 crash involving semi and pick-up truck

UPDATE (8:30 p.m.):

Madison County Sheriff Sgt. Mike Courtney tells EastIdahoNews.com the body of an individual is still inside the pick-up truck that was crushed during the crash. Crews are using extreme caution in removing the semi from the pick-up.

UPDATE (8:05 p.m.):

Idaho State Police is assisting the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in reconstructing the accident scene, according to a sergeant with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The semi-truck is currently being lifted off a pick-up truck that was crushed in the crash.

ORIGINAL STORY:

THORNTON — One person was killed in a crash on U.S. Highway 20 the evening of Tuesday Dec. 8, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

One lane of northbound traffic is closed in Madison County after the crash occurred around 6:00 p.m.

Officials say the accident involved a semi-truck and a pick-up truck at the Thornton interchange through across Highway 20 and Yellowstone Highway. Witnesses report there was a large amount of smoke and the aired smelled like fuel.

No word on if anyone else was injured in the crash. Witnesses say Rexburg police officers, Madison County Sheriff deputies, an ambulance and three firetrucks are on scene. The Idaho Department of Transportation has been called out to assist.

Travelers are asked to avoid Highway 20 for the next several hours.
