Idaho Falls salon ‘doing something’ to help veterans and community
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — The #shutupanddosomething campaign is in full swing in eastern Idaho.
The philanthropic effort involves performing monthly service projects in Idaho Falls to provide a helping hand to the needy and to help bring the community together. The events are organized by stylist Hallie Kane and employees and students at the Vogue Beauty Salon, School of Hair and Nail Design and Esthetics.
“We want to inspire other people to just do something instead of just talking about doing something,” Kane said.
The first event was held Monday, Dec. 14. The Vogue Beauty Salon offered free haircuts for veterans all day. Kane said about 40 veterans showed up throughout the day to get a routine trim.
Floyd Actis, who served in the Koran War from 1950 to 1954, said these events show appreciation for those who have given their lives for our country.
“I’m really appreciative of what they’re doing. It’s great. I don’t have a lot of hair to cut anymore, but it still needs trimming,” Actis said.
Kane said her motivation to hold the event came from an emotional experience she had with a veteran in the salon.
“There was a guy that came in, and he didn’t have enough money to pay for his haircut, and he happened to be a veteran,” Kane said, “It made me feel like we (should) do haircuts for veterans.”
She said she wants her focus to be on the people they serve.
“It’s nice to be able to spread some good. I feel like the movement, #shutupanddosomething is a tiny bit harsh, but I think in the same sense everyone should start acting instead of talking about it,” Kane said.
Next month #shutupanddosomething plans to do a sock drive for those in need. Vogue Beauty Salon also will be continuing the free cuts for veterans the second Thursday of every month.
