ARIMO – A teenager is in custody after police said he made threats against Marsh Valley High School students on social media.

Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said deputies learned about the threats the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 6. The teenage boy made statements on Facebook about being a loner and allegedly asked for other students who felt the same way to join him in carrying out a threat at school on Monday Dec. 7.

Nielsen said the juvenile, whose name hasn’t been released, was arrested Sunday and is being held in juvenile detention in Bannock County.

“There is no threat and school is open as usual,” Nielsen told EastIdahoNews.com. “We have extra officers at the school to make sure everything is okay.”

Marsh Valley High School Principal Michael Welch issued the following statement to patrons.

“This morning we were made aware of threats being made on social media. These threats were taken seriously. Student safety is our number one concern. We contacted the sheriff department and worked with them throughout the day. We feel the situation is contained and we will be having school on Monday. Thank you for your concerns, we have been concerned also.”

The teenager was arraigned in court this afternoon. It is unclear if he has been charged. EastIdahoNews.com has reached out to the Bannock County Prosecutors Office for more information. We’ll post more details as they come in.
