ALPINE, Wyoming — The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has identified the people killed in Monday’s airplane crash near the Idaho/Wyoming border.
Sgt. Bryan Lovell said the victims of the crash were 61-year-old Reade Genzlinger of Bryn Athens, Pennsylvania, and a 17-year-old girl from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Both victims were part-time Alpine residents.
Authorities said the Yak 52 Russian trainer aircraft was flying a recreational flight out of the Alpine area with two occupants, Genzlinger, who owned the aircraft, and the teenager. Two other aircraft were flying in the area at the time of the crash that were occupied by family of the victims.
Emergency personnel from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Swan Valley Fire, Idaho Falls Ambulance, Lincoln County Wyoming Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, and Alpine Fire responded to the crash at Palisades Reservoir around 4:20 p.m., according to a news release.
The crash was about two miles north of the runway at the Alpine Wyoming airport near Palisades Reservoir. The plane did not crash in the water.
The area was covered with 2 to 3 feet of snow. Rescue crews used snowmobiles and rescue sleds to recover the victims late Monday night. Both occupants were found deceased at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by local authorities and the FAA.
