East Idaho Eats: Bakers Dozen rolling out the Spudnut
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — Local donut shop Bakers Dozen doesn’t use traditional ingredients to make their donuts light and fluffy.
Randy Jensen, owner of Bakers Dozen, uses potato flour in all of his raised donuts to make what’s called a “spudnut.”
The signature mix of ingredients allows their spudnuts to be delightfully soft compared to other run-of-the-mill donuts.
“Our main deal is the spudnut. It’s a different kind of donut,” Jensen said. “It’s got potato flakes in it – or potato flour.”
Jensen said the bakery also specializes in an array of cake donuts – from sour cream to buttermilk down to blueberry and chocolate.
At Jensen’s family run operation, he and his kids experiment with different donut flavors to formulate the next success.
During the week Jensen said they bake around 225 dozen donuts a day – which equals 2,700 total. On the weekends, that amount is nearly double – with 400 dozen equalling 4,800 donuts in all. There are 31 different donut varieties that customers can’t get enough of.
“We have a s’more donut, we make a mango filled donut, we make an Oreo filled donut. It’s a chocolate donut cut in half filled with whip cream and then iced and dunked in Oreo cookies,” Jensen said.
Sheila Smith says she frequents the shop about once a week. Her favorite orders are the s’more donut and the Hershey donut.
“Oh, they’re just better,” Smith said. “They have some rally interesting varieties.”
An EastIdahoNews.com favorite is the “Texan” – a donut quadruple the size of any regular raised donut. Jensen makes those along with special order requests.
Jensen says first timers at Bakers Dozen get their donut for free, but there’s a catch.
“If you’ve never been in before you get a free donut – one of any choice whatever you want,” Jensen said. “The theory behind that is if you like it, you can tell people you’ve been in. If you don’t like it, it didn’t cost you any money so don’t mention you stopped by.”
Bakers Dozen is located at 561 S Woodruff Ave, Idaho Falls. The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday to 6:00 a.m. to noon. Breads, bagels, sandwiches, soups and other baked are also offered.
