Lewis Street bridge to be replaced; information meeting scheduled

POCATELLO — An Old Town bridge is on its way out.
The Lewis Street Bridge that spans the Portneuf River is scheduled to be replaced in early 2017. Representatives from the City of Pocatello’s Public Works and Engineering Departments will be on hand for a public information meeting Monday, July 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 911 North 7th Avenue, to discuss the project. During the meeting, officials will outline how the project will impact residents including tentative work hours, detours, and schedule.
“Lewis Street Bridge has faithfully served the City since its initial construction in 1948,” said Deirdre Castillo, City Engineer. “But with all structures, there comes a time when they need to be replaced. When City staff were initially looking into the project, they found that it would be more cost effective and better serve the city’s needs by replacing it rather than rehabilitating the bridge.”
Currently, the bridge spans 61 feet and was in place before the concrete channel for the Portneuf River was constructed in 1969.
The estimated cost of the project is $1.3 million with the City paying approximately $93,000. The remaining balance of the project is being paid with federal funding sources.
