Pocatello Flag Redesign Effort to be Featured Nationally

POCATELLO — The City of Pocatello’s unofficial flag and the effort to raise a new, official flag for Pocatello is set to take the stage nationally.
This Sunday at 8 a.m., CBS Sunday Morning will air a segment on flag design with a portion dedicated to highlighting Pocatello’s now-infamous flag – singled out in a Roman Mars TED talk as the nation’s worst – and how the City and residents have taken it upon themselves to see the city design a proper flag.
“It’s exciting to see our city on a national stage,” said Logan McDougall, Public Information Officer and chair of the City’s Flag Design Ad-Hoc Committee. “I think the story will show that we’ve taken this piece of our history, a flag that was never meant to be a flag, in stride and used what might be considered a negative as a force for positive change.”
While they were here, correspondent Mo Rocca and crew paid a visit to Ms. Delonas’ class at Green Acres Elementary and worked through an exercise in flag design. Rocca also sat down with Greg Gunter, owner of Rave Communications, for a look at the design that became the unofficial flag for Pocatello.

As for the Flag Design Ad-Hoc Committee’s efforts, the group is officially accepting submissions from the public. Designers are asked to submit either a digital or hand drawn rendition of the Pocatello flag along with a brief description of the symbolism in their design.
“The answer to the question of ‘what is Pocatello?’ is different for everyone,” McDougall said. “Whether you’re a professional designer, amateur artist, or just someone who likes to doodle we want to see what Pocatello means to you personally.”
Recently, the committee has also been engaged in an education campaign to let Pocatellans know why a new flag is needed.
“So far, the response has been very positive,” McDougall said. “People are interested and often times you can see people in the audience start to form their ideas right there.”
