Deputies say 42-year-old Brant Balls was hunting moose with his 64-year-old mother, Carol Balls. A 25-06 caliber rifle being carried by Carol Balls discharged and struck her son. A 911 call was made from a nearby camp.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Ambulance and a medical helicopter responded to the scene. Brant Balls was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Deputies say several campers and hunters with medical backgrounds, including a surgery technician, helped in the lifesaving efforts.
The bullet hit Balls in the upper left leg and shattered his upper femur, according to a GoFundMe page. It also caused damage to a number of small arteries and nerves.
Brant was the main supporter for his family and his recovery will be long and hard,” the GoFundMe page reads. “We are asking for people to donate what they can to help with medical support as well as financial support for his family. Prayers and love are also appreciated. The family also wants to say a special thank you to those who were on the mountain that came to Brant’s rescue. These people’s selfless, heroic actions undoubtably saved Brant’s life and are the reason that he is still with us.”
