SUGAR CITY – A garbage truck had to drop its load of rubbish in a parking lot Friday after the garbage caught fire.

Sugar City Public Works Director Zane Baler said the garbage in the PSI Environmental Services truck ignited at about noon.

“They had to dump the garbage out to keep the truck from burning up,” Baler said.

The cause of the fire was hot coals that had been placed in a residential garbage bin.

“It was flaming up. So I just put it out with my back hoe,” Baler said.

Sugar City officials, the Madison Sheriff’s Office and Madison Fire Department responded to the parking lot of the old Sugar City Mercantile on North Teton and Center Street. Maler said they were able to put the flames out before it got out of control. The Madison Fire Department sprayed some water on the fire to make sure it didn’t reignite.

After the fire was out they loaded the garbage back into the truck.
