City of Idaho Falls announces new police chief

The following is a news release from the city of Idaho Falls.
IDAHO FALLS — The City of Idaho Falls is pleased to announce that Mayor Rebecca Casper has appointed Chief Bryce Johnson of Juneau, Alaska to the position of police chief for the Idaho Falls Police Department. The confirmation vote has been scheduled for the City Council meeting on July 13.
The appointment comes after Chief Mark McBride announced his retirement earlier this year. Chief McBride was sworn in as the chief in February 2013. He has been with the Idaho Falls Police Department for 37 years.
“Chief McBride is a rare sort of police officer who has dedicated his entire career to public service. Our citizens and our community have benefited from his commitment,” states Mayor Casper.
Chief Bryce Johnson has been the Chief of the Juneau Police Department since June 2013. The Juneau Police Department is a full service municipal police department that employs 92 full-time staff.
Prior to moving to Juneau, Chief Johnson spent 21 years moving through the ranks within the Salt Lake City Police Department. Some of his assignments included Watch Command, Tactical Commander, and Assistant Bureau Commander.
Chief Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah and a Masters of Public Administration degree from Brigham Young University.
Chief Johnson served as the chairperson for the Alaska Police Standards Council. He also served as a board member of the Alaska Chiefs of Police Association, Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE), and Juneau Housing First. Chief Johnson has been an active volunteer with Family Promise and the Boy Scouts of America, serving as scout master, varsity coach and charter representative.
Chief Johnson served for eight years in the United States Naval Reserve as an intelligence analyst and was an adjunct professor, teaching concurrent enrollment Criminal Justice classes for Salt Lake Community College and the Salt Lake School District.
“Chief Johnson comes to us with an impressive background in law enforcement and community leadership. He was highly regarded by all those who met him during the in extensive interview process,” states Casper.
Chief Johnson’s start date will be determined at a later time.
