CHUBBUCK — Both the alleged murderer and the victim have been identified in the fatal shooting that occurred Friday afternoon outside a Chubbuck convenience store.

Authorities have identified the alleged shooter as Anthony Leinweber, 38, of Chubbuck. Leinweber was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at the Bannock County jail on a second-degree murder charge.

If convicted, Leinweber faces 10 years to life in prison.

The victim who died at the scene has been identified by authorities as Robert Phelps, 37, of Chubbuck.

The shooting occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. in front of the Jacksons Food Store, which is located at the corner of Yellowstone and Stuart avenues.

Authorities said it appears Phelps was shot once in the face and an autopsy is being scheduled.

Though police did not comment on the suspect’s motive, authorities did say that Phelps and Leinweber knew each other.

The Chubbuck Police Department, Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Bannock County Coroner’s Office and Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

“Investigations of this nature take a lot of time, and we understand the public’s desire to know what is happening in their city,” the Chubbuck Police Department said in a statement issued Friday evening. “Once we are able, we will release further information.”
