Burton Elementary School closing due to illness
Published at | Updated atREXBURG — Another Rexburg school is closing this week after 18 percent of its student body has been reported sick.
Burton Elementary Principal Landon LeFevre says 75 of about 400 students are out due to the flu or some other illness. Teachers have also been absent because of illness.
“Hopefully letting out school for two days will allow the kids to go home and get feeling better,” LeFevre says.
He says they’ve been monitoring the student count on campus since Adam Elementary closed Monday due to illness and the numbers have continued to rise. LeFevre says classes will be canceled for the next two days before resuming Monday, February 4th.
LeFevre says the custodial crew has been wiping down all hard surfaces and will work to keep the school sanitized once students return at the beginning of the week.

“We are concerned about your student’s well being,” LeFevre says as a message to parents.
This is the first time LeFevre has ever closed school due to overwhelming illness.
Madison School District 321 administrators are continuing to assess the situation across all schools. A Facebook post on the district page says, “Should you feel inclined to keep your children home, by all means, do so, and schools will allow consideration on attendance requirements.”
Adams Elementary was closed Tuesday and Wednesday and will resume school Thursday. A number of other schools in eastern Idaho have been closed this week including Tetonia Elementary School, Hope Lutheran School and American Heritage Charter School.
Correction: Taylorview Middle School had a high number of sickness-related absences, but was not closed as earlier reported.
