Ferris wheel at Utah store closed indefinitely after teen falls off

SANDY, Utah (KSL.com) — The Ferris wheel at the Scheels store in Sandy has been closed indefinitely after a 14-year-old boy fell from it and suffered critical injuries on Tuesday, a store official said.
“As a matter of procedure, our Ferris wheel will be closed until we can deem it ready for operation,” Scheels Store Leader Cory Tweden said in an email to KSL.
The boy fell on Tuesday afternoon at the store, located at 11282 S. State. It’s not clear exactly how far the boy fell.
An update on the boy’s condition was not available on Wednesday. No other details about the fall were available.
The store conducts maintenance and safety checks daily to make sure the equipment is working properly on the Ferris wheel, Tweden said.
The Ferris wheel will be closed “until we can deem it ready for operation,” Tweden said. He did not say how long the closure will last.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and everybody who was involved,” Tweden said.
The Ferris wheel is 65 feet tall and has 16 cars, according to the Scheels website.
