RIGBY — A man was arrested for arson Sunday after he allegedly set his own house on fire.

Bryce Johnson, 57, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail after Jefferson County Sheriff deputies were called to a home on the 4000 block of Menan Lorenzo Highway around 5:50 p.m.

A witness told investigators she saw Johnson carrying a gas can into his residence, according to Sheriff Steve Anderson. Anderson says Johnson poured gasoline inside his home and ignited it before using fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

Deputies interviewed Johnson, who admitted to starting the fire because he “didn’t want anyone to take his residence,” according to Anderson.

The fire caused very little damage to the home and nobody was injured. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Idaho State Fire Marshal and Central Fire District in conducting their investigation.

Johnson is expected to appear in court this week.
