RIGBY – A man was arrested after he threatened a female family member with a sword, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies said in a news release Wednesday.

On Sunday around 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic dispute involving a weapon at a home on the 4000 block of East 300 North. When they arrived, the female homeowner, age 40, told them she had called 911 because a 25-year-old family member, Shawn Winterfeld, had threatened her with a sword.

Deputies said when the victim and Winterfeld were having a verbal argument, he got a 24-inch sword from his belongings and chased her. Another family member intervened, and Winterfeld went into another area of the home until deputies arrived.

Winterfeld was arrested and booked in the Jefferson County Jail. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony. According to court records, his preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 8.

Although Winterfeld is accused of a crime, it does not necessarily mean he committed it. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
