OGDEN, Utah (KSL.com) — A man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of a busy grocery store Saturday afternoon before he engaged in a standoff with police, authorities said.

The standoff ended when police said the man suspected in the fatal shooting shot himself. He was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition Saturday evening, according to Ogden Police Lt. Tyler Ziegler.

The chain of events began about 1:15 p.m. Officers responded to reports of shots fired outside of a Smith’s grocery store located at 1485 S. Harrison Blvd.

Ziegler said the man, whose name and age weren’t immediately released, confronted his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot outside of the store. A 41-year-old woman, whose name was also not immediately released, was shot and killed.

The man fled the scene after the shooting but was quickly identified and located in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of Maple Street, according to Ziegler. He added that it led to a standoff with Ogden Metro SWAT that lasted several hours before the man shot himself.

The place where the man was located at was less than 4 miles south of the site of the shooting. Officials with the Ogden Police Department and the Weber-Morgan Homicide Task Force were investigating the chain of events that unfolded Saturday.
