UPDATE:
The following is a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

Emergency personnel responded to the intersection of 105th East (also known as North 4400 East) and North County Line Road at approximately 3:20 p.m. this afternoon to a two-vehicle injury crash with one vehicle submerged in a canal. As deputies and emergency personnel arrived, they found a pickup pulling a trailer traveling east on County Line Road had collided with a southbound silver Toyota car as it crossed onto 105th East. The collision sent the car into the adjacent canal.

Bystanders entered the water and were able to pull an adult male from the driver’s side of the car. Arriving deputies and fire personnel entered the water and eventually pulled an adult male passenger out of the car after it had floated under the canal bridge.

The driver was transported by ambulance to Idaho Falls Community Hospital with serious injuries, and the passenger was airlifted to East Idaho Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. The driver of the pickup, an adult male from Rexburg, was uninjured.

Deputies are continuing to investigate the crash, and no further information is available at this time. Deputies from Bonneville and Jefferson County responded along with Idaho State Police, Jefferson Central Fire, Idaho Falls Fire and Air Idaho Rescue.

ORIGINAL STORY (published at 5 p.m.):

RIGBY — Law enforcement and first responders are currently on the scene of a crash after a vehicle landed in a canal.

One person was taken by helicopter to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

The incident happened near North 4400 East and East County Line Road in Jefferson County, according to bystanders. The call came in around 3:18 p.m. Wednesday.

Central Fire District Chief Carl Anderson tells EastIdahoNews.com that a car went into the canal, and at least two people were in the vehicle.

Bystanders say the car ended up lodged under a bridge in the canal after being struck by a pickup truck.

One person in the car was rescued by emergency responders and transported by air ambulance. Anderson said, according to his radio traffic, that the other person attempted to crawl out of the vehicle, and bystanders were able to get them out of the canal. That person had less severe injuries.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department is also on the scene, along with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.
