JEROME — An Idaho State Police trooper who was critically injured during an accident told his wife, “I love you” at the hospital and has been making progress.

Over the weekend, Wendler would wake up upon command. He knew his name and location.

On Sept. 11, he was on light oxygen and breathing on his own.

“The nursing staff and doctors continue to provide amazing care to Mike, and we are thankful for each one,” the GoFundMe update said.

On Monday, the page said, “This morning his wife, Amy, family and friends were greeted with Mike’s smile, and he recognized every person in the room and is able to hold short conversations with each one. He is aware of his surroundings and is giving hugs and fist bumps.”

The page said that on Monday, the medical team would focus on treating some of his physical injuries and begin transitioning him to the rehabilitation phase of his recovery.

The GoFundMe page for Wendler and his family has a goal of raising $50,000 for medical expenses. As of Monday morning, nearly $45,000 has been raised, and the number continues to rise.
