Man accused of sex crimes extradited to Idaho Falls to face charges over 10 years later
Published atIDAHO FALLS — A 35-year-old North Carolina man has been extradited to Bonneville County to face charges after he allegedly confessed to molesting a girl over a decade later.
Everett Guyn Haynes IV was charged with felony lewd conduct with a child under 16 and felony child sexual abuse by permitting a child to witness an act of sexual conduct.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by the Idaho Falls Police Department, a 15-year-old girl told law enforcement in December that she was a young child when Haynes sexually molested her. A family member believed it happened at a fourplex in Idaho Falls.
Through investigation, police discovered Haynes was hearing impaired and communicated only through Facebook messenger and video chat and that he lived in North Carolina. Haynes has not been in contact with the victim for about a decade.
The victim and a family member agreed to create a Facebook account under the victim’s name, which the detective would then use to contact Haynes, posing as her.
In April, the detective began a conversation with Haynes that lasted multiple weeks. It was clear that Haynes believed he was talking to the victim as he recalled old memories of her, court documents said.
The detective confronted Haynes multiple times only about the specific allegations that the victim made. Haynes initially denied the claims by saying he did not commit the acts and then saying he did not remember. After talking to him more, Haynes allegedly made multiple confessions to each allegation and gave estimated dates and locations where he committed the crimes.
He provided details about how he got away with certain acts that he committed as well as why he was scared to get caught, documents said.
He allegedly said if police asked about the abuse, she should lie to them.
One of the reasons he allegedly gave for committing these crimes was that the victim was beautiful, new and fresh.
At one point, when the detective posing as the victim asked about a specific sex act, Haynes allegedly responded, “I was young sooo wrong” and admitted he made a mistake.
Through investigation, the detective found that the crimes occurred sometime between July to December 2010. Haynes would have been about 22 years old.
Throughout the conversation, Haynes sent multiple videos, pictures, and live video calls, showing his face and further documenting that it was, in fact, Haynes who was in control of the Facebook account at the time of these multiple confessions, police said.
An arrest warrant was issued for Haynes on May 2.
According to an Idaho Falls Police spokeswoman, an Idaho Falls police detective went to North Carolina to arrest Haynes with the assistance of local law enforcement there. He was arrested on May 8. He was extradited to Idaho Falls on May 24.
The lewd conduct charge is punishable by up to life in prison, a $50,000 fine, a $5,000 compensatory fine and restitution.
The permitting a child to witness an act of sexual conduct charge is punishable by up to 25 years in prison, a $50,000 fine and restitution.
Haynes was given a $100,000 bond. If he posts it, he is required to go to pretrial supervision. A no-contact order was issued between him and the victim.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 6 at 1 p.m. at the Bonneville County Courthouse.
Though Haynes has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
