The incident happened on State Highway 39 near Snake River High School on Saturday around 8:30 p.m.

Bingham County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Gary Yancey said a man was driving a GMC pickup truck south on 900 West. Ortiz was the passenger. The driver allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection and hit another pickup truck, which was driving east on the highway.

“The two occupants of the GMC were ejected,” Yancey told EastIdahoNews.com on Sunday.

Both were taken to a local hospital, where Ortiz died.

Yancey said the driver of the other truck had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

The crash is being investigated by the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office. Yancey said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.
