Don’t have kids to take trick-or-treating? Take your dogs this weekend!

AMMON – A local woman is organizing a Howl-O-Ween Trunk-or-Treat event to celebrate the holiday with their dogs.
Jana Hebdon, a self-proclaimed animal lover, says she’s wanted to organize an event like this for a long time.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for the last couple of years,” says Hebdon. “I don’t have any kids left at home. They’re all raised and have families of their own, and I just have dogs.”
Thanks to some of the Life in Idaho Falls Facebook group members, Hebdon was able to find many like-minded people who were also interested in putting on an event for pets to enjoy and dog parents to mingle.
“I didn’t know if there would be much interest. Then some lady, one day on the Life in Idaho Falls (Facebook group) page, said, ‘I don’t have any kids, but I have dogs. Do you know if anybody does anything for the animals for Halloween?'” says Hebdon. “I said, ‘Well, I’ve wanted to, but I didn’t know if there was an interest.’ And I got so much response, I decided I was going to organize a trunk-or-treat for pets, for our fur babies!”
The idea quickly spiraled into a full-on event, being held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Peterson Park in Ammon.
“The people that are participating, other than my family and a few friends, it is all people off social media, off of Facebook in the Idaho Falls area,” says Hebdon. “It’s got such a tremendous response, and people are just volunteering their time to come and pass out dog treats from their trunks.”
Aside from mingling with fellow dog moms and dads, some participants are even decorating their cars for spooky season and making homemade natural dog treats for the furry attendees.
“The actual trunk-or-treat is from 1 to 4, but I have the park at noon to set up and decorate, and kind of get to know each other, because I haven’t even met any of them,” says Hebdon. “We just have a love for animals, and we’re all coming together to have a little fun with them.”

Hebdon said participants have been conscientious when making homemade treats to ensure they are dog-friendly and easy on the tummy.
“I know myself, I have made homemade ones, all completely natural homemade dog treat. I know a couple other people I’ve corresponded with are making homemade ones as well,” says Hebdon. “We’ve all been very careful to research ingredients to make sure everything, like the pumpkin and the peanut-butter, are completely natural, no sugars, no nothing.”
Some of the cars will also be handing out candy because, according to Hebdon, “If you’re gonna have dogs, you’re gonna have children.”
All pets must be on a leash.
The event will be located in the west parking lot near 3740 Samuel Street at Peterson Park.
