Fun towers of cereal at local bank part of donation drive for food pantry
Published atRIGBY — Inside a local bank, you will find big towers of cleverly-stacked Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the sweet smell of waffle crisp. Why? It’s all for a good cause.
D.L. Evans Bank in Rigby has put on a cereal drive for the Giving Cupboard, which is a food pantry in Jefferson County.
It’s quite the spectacle to see. There’s donated cereal everywhere inside the bank.
“We had cereal boxes in our conference room and we were like, ‘You know what? What’s a good way to have these conversations with people and attract attention?'” said Danna Beckman, the branch manager at D.L. Evans Bank in Rigby. “A couple of employees went and started stacking cereal boxes up in one tower and it just kind of was a waterfall effect after that.”
Beckman said the employees are having fun with it and the customers love to donate cereal.
The bank started the drive in the middle of September and it will continue until Oct. 18.
“We initially had a goal of 500 boxes and we have received phenomenal support from the community and right now, we have 1,100 boxes. Now, our new goal is 1,200,” she said. “People just heard about it and started bringing more (boxes).”
Beckman said she is grateful to see so much support from the community.
“There was a group of four employees that were out shopping at WinCo and they had a gal in the checkout line ask what we were doing and she said, ‘Oh that is really cool. I am not going to bring in cereal boxes but here is $100. Go buy more cereal with the $100,'” she said.
If you would like to donate, D.L. Evans Bank in Rigby is open next week and accepting the cereal Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“I am going to volunteer my other branches around eastern Idaho. If anyone didn’t want to come up to Rigby, if they dropped off cereal at the other branches, I’d be happy to go get it,” Beckman said. “We welcome anybody that wants to bring anything to help with the cause because the need is great.”
The other branch locations include Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Blackfoot and Pocatello.
“D.L. Evans is always extremely supportive of the Giving Cupboard and their staff volunteers at the pantry every month. We are thrilled that they held this cereal drive, and that received such strong community support,” said Kori Ellis, president of the Giving Cupboard. “The Giving Cupboard is providing food to approximately 200 households a week.”
