BLACKFOOT – A 30-year-old man was sentenced Monday for molesting an 11-year-old girl.

District Judge Darren Simpson sentenced Nathan Christopher Gumaer to a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Gumaer was originally charged with felony child sexual abuse of a minor in 2018. The case was delayed until 2022 due to Gumaer serving a prison sentence in Arizona, according to a news release from Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Ryan W. Jolley.

Gumaer initially pleaded not guilty to the felony charge after arriving in Idaho in November 2022 but signed a plea agreement in August 2023, stating he would plead guilty to the charge in exchange for the prosecution agreeing not to recommend more than a minimum of 10 years in prison at sentencing.

During the sentencing, the prosecution, led by Jolley, recommended a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Gumaer’s attorney, Scott Madsen, recommended a sentence of probation, or in the alternative, a retained jurisdiction, otherwise known as a rider program.

Background of the case

In June 2017, a deputy with the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a woman who said her 11-year-old daughter told her that she had been sexually abused by Gumaer, according to court documents.

In July 2017, the victim was brought to the Bright Tomorrows Child Advocacy Center in Pocatello for a forensic interview.

According to police reports, the victim disclosed that the first time she was assaulted by Gumaer was when they were living in the same house for about two months.

The victim said Gumaer came into her bedroom and assaulted her five times while they were staying in the same house.

According to court documents, the victim told the interviewer that the last time she was sexually assaulted was when she was staying at a relative’s apartment with Gumaer in Blackfoot.

The victim stated she was sleeping on the couch in the living room, and Gumaer was sleeping on the floor. During the night, Gumaer came up to the couch and sexually assaulted her.

At the time of the sexual assault investigation, Gumaer was incarcerated for a separate crime in Tucson, Arizona.

Officers were able to contact him by phone, where he reportedly admitted to sexually assaulting the victim on three different occasions while staying in Idaho.
