The following is a news release from Idahoans for Open Primaries.

REXBURG — With nearly half of the necessary signatures to get on the ballot this fall already collected, the Open Primaries Initiative is gathering steam. The Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum on Wednesday, Dec. 13, to discuss the proposed initiative that would transform Idaho’s current closed primary system and give a voice to the more than 270,00 independent voters who are blocked from participating in Idaho’s most important elections.

Idahoans for Open Primaries is a grassroots coalition working to end Idaho’s closed primary system and create a non-partisan primary election. Currently, the initiative has more than 46,000 petition signatures and public endorsements from more than 120 members of Idaho’s GOP.

“Our current election system rewards candidates who focus on creating fear and conflict and punishes those who focus on solving real problems,” said Hyrum Erickson (R), Madison County Precinct Committeeman. “Because the Open Primaries Initiative will allow all Idahoans to vote, it will make candidates responsive to the entire state, not just a vocal minority.”

Featured guest speakers at the event include Maria Nate, Secretary for Madison County Republican Women and Hyrum Erickson, Madison County Precinct Committeeman.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Rexburg City Hall, 35 North First East. An optional lunch is available for $10. RSVP is requested for the lunch by calling (208) 356-5700 or emailing the Rexburg Area Chamber.
