POCATELLO — A man police say plunged a knife six inches into another man during an altercation has been charged with multiple crimes.

Dallas Devon Williams, 51, faces felony charges for aggravated battery and possession of methamphetamine, and a misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia, court records show.

Pocatello police officers received reports of a physical altercation near the intersection of Nora Avenue and Stockman Road on May 13, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Officers were informed that during the altercation, Williams stabbed another man, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

When officers arrived at the hospital, they learned that the victim was sedated and intubated.

Officers returned the following day hoping to speak with the victim, but he was heavily medicated due to a heart surgery necessitated by the injuries suffered, the affidavit says.

Two weeks later, on May 28, officers were finally able to interview the victim. He said that he and Williams were with a third person driving around town when the victim confronted Williams about his treatment of a mutual friend of theirs. The two men were involved in a “physical ‘scuffle,'” which was broken up by the witness.

Then, a short time later, the victim and the witness were near the intersection of Nora and Stockman when Williams parked roughly 40 feet away and stared at them.

The victim approached the truck to speak with Williams and saw that Williams had an M1 Carbine laying across his lap. He told officers he believed the rifle to have been loaded. He asked Williams if Williams intended to shoot him, to which Williams responded by yelling at him.

Williams then got out of the truck holding the rifle. The victim said he was able to knock the rifle out of Williams’ hands using a spare tire in the truck bed, and that he reached for the rifle planning to remove the magazine and use the butt of the gun to hit Williams.

While he was doing so, though, the victim said, Williams pulled a knife and began swinging it at the victim, slicing the victim on his left forearm and left thigh. Then, Williams stabbed the victim in the ribs, causing a puncture roughly six inches deep, the affidavit says.

The stab wound cut the victim’s lung and heart, according to the affidavit.

On May 29, officers found Williams driving near the 1000 block of Samuel Street and placed him under arrest.

During a search of Williams’ vehicle, officers found “several knives” as well as a knife holder containing a methamphetamine smoking pipe and a “small baggie” of suspected methamphetamine.

The suspected drugs were tested and returned a presumptive positive.

Williams was taken to Bannock County Jail, where he was booked and is being held on a $85,000 bond.

Though Williams has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.

If he is found guilty, Williams would face up to 23 years in prison.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court for an arraignment hearing before District Judge Robert Naftz on July 8.
