BLACKFOOT — A coroner has ruled that a man died by suicide following a car crash Thursday night.

Authorities responded to the wreck at 1100 West at 480 North, outside Blackfoot around 5 p.m. A 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was heading southbound when it crashed into a power pole, injuring two of the three occupants.

Directly after the crash, the power pole struck a transformer, sparking a fire. This burned dozens of acres of farmland and destroyed a nearby well pump.

After the driver assisted one of the injured passengers away from the crash, he fatally shot himself with a revolver, according to the Bingham County Coroner’s Office.

Following the completion on the investigation, the Coroner’s Office released its findings Monday and concluded the driver died by suicide.

The two surviving passengers, a man and a woman, were transported by ambulance to Bingham Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Blackfoot firefighters extinguished the brushfire and the road was closed for around five hours.

All three of the vehicle occupants were from Blackfoot.
