IDAHO FALLS – A local boxing club is gearing up for its annual Rumble in the Jungle competition.

The sixth annual event is happening August 10 at the Bonneville County 4-H Complex at 1542 East 73rd South in Idaho Falls. Members of Razor’s Edge Boxing Club will spar with people in other clubs in this non-ranking USA boxing show.

There will be 25 bouts throughout the night with athletes ranging from age 8 to about 25.

Seventeen-year-old Marcelino Juarez has been part of the club for a while, but will be making his fighting debut. Sixteen-year-old Owen Taule of Idaho Falls, who just won a bronze medal at the junior Olympics in Kansas last month, is returning for his second year.

Rumble in the Jungle is 8-year-old Marcelo Renteria’s second fight since joining the club.

Twenty-four-year-old Martin Gordo of Rexburg is returning for his fifth year. His fight with Christian Pasillas of Utah is the headlining bout.

“He has a lot of experience … and always puts on a good show,” Razor’s Edge Head Coach Holly Gregson says of Gordo. “He’s a multiple state and regional Golden Glove champion. He wanted to compete so we’re putting him on the main event this year.”

Gordo joined the club six years ago. Fresh off a win at a belt show at the Mountain Event Center in Pocatello July 20, Gordo tells EastIdahoNews.com he’s looking forward to sparring with his opponent in an elite match.

“He’s a regional champion in a different weight, so it will be an elite match. We’ll be on the same level,” Gordo says. “I’m excited … and pretty tuned up.”

Rumble in the Jungle will begin at 4 p.m. It’s expected to last three or four hours.

Razor’s Edge Boxing Club is a nonprofit organization that provides an outlet for at-risk youth. It was formed in 2006 and there are at least 75 active members of the club between 8 and 35. Practices are held weekly at 757 South Woodruff.

Rumble in the Jungle serves as a fundraiser for the club. Gregson is excited the event is being held during an Olympic year and she’s urging people to attend as the show celebrates its six-year anniversary.

“We’ve been able to go farther than we ever dreamed,” Gregson says. “We’re excited to be following the Olympics. That’s been an added motivation for us to see that dreams are closer than you think and it all begins at home in clubs just like ours.”

Birria tacos, Mexican corn and Aguas Frescas — a drink made from watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew — and other homemade concessions will be available.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students. Those five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased with cash or Venmo at the gate.
