The crash happened Thursday morning around 2:15 a.m. on Fremont Avenue under the U.S. Highway 20 overpass.

First responders found a 2014 Dodge Charger with Gomez-Contreras inside. The vehicle was on fire, according to the Idaho Falls Police Department.

Idaho Falls Fire crews extinguished the fire and extricated him out of the vehicle. He was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, where he later died.

Through investigation, police officers determined the Charger had been traveling south on Fremont Avenue, according to a news release.

“The vehicle went up onto the median, struck a large signpost, and then continued into a support pillar for the Highway 20 overpass, ultimately stopping in the northbound lanes,” police said.

The investigation revealed that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
