AMMON — Dogs are being invited to a splash day at a local pool, which promises to be paws-itively fun!

This Saturday, Aug. 24, the city of Ammon will hold an event where dogs can have the last swim at the McCowin Pool. It will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Organizers expect a good crowd.

“We have closed the pool down for the year for humans. All of the lifeguard staff are going back to school, but we thought before we close it all down and winterize the pool, let’s invite the dogs in the community out and have a dip in the pool,” said Randal Miller, Ammon recreation director.

Miller told EastIdahoNews.com it’s the first time the city has put on an event like this. They got the idea from other cities, and people in the Ammon community asked about a dog day at the pool.

“We have had that request for the last couple of years and never done it but this year, we are going to give it a try,” Miller said.

There are some rules at the splash day for the dogs, which are listed below:

  • Only dogs are allowed in the pool
  • Dog waste must be cleaned up and properly disposed
  • Dogs must be on leash at all times, except in the pool
  • Leave collars on dogs while swimming

“We have checked with the health department to make sure from their standpoint that we are all good to go. They know we are doing this,” Miller added.

This is a free event, but donations will be accepted to help with the upkeep of the pool.

Petco from Ammon will be there, too, handing out dog treats for four-legged furry friends.

“Come on out and bring your dogs, and have a good time!” Miller said. “If (owners) want to bring a ball or something for the dog to jump in and fetch a ball, by all means, bring a toy.”
