Game of the Week preview: Week 1 features a pair of 3A football top-5s
Published atFIRTH — For this week’s EastIdahoNews.com Game of the Week, we have selected the West Side Pirates at the Firth Cougars.
While a handful of teams have already seen action in Week 0, including the Cougars who earned a dominant 45-0 victory over the New Plymouth Pilgrims, West Side will start its 2024 campaign this week.
Both teams appear on the IHSAA Week 1 state media polls — which features West Side as the state’s premier Division 3A team. Firth joined the ranks of the top five this week — at No. 5 — following its win last week.
The non-conference foes met last season with West Side claiming a decisive 48-6 victory.
Firth finished the 2023 season 3-5.
The Pirates, behind longtime coach Tyson Moser, earned their fourth State 2A football championship in five seasons last year, besting the Declo Hornets 41-13 in the championship game at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena.
With the change in classifications this season, both schools have been moved from Division 2A to 3A.
Week 1 of the high school football season will feature several additional intriguing matchups, including Aberdeen at American Falls, Hillcrest at Madison and Idaho Falls at Thunder Ridge. EastIdahoNews.com will post all scores on our EastIdahoNews.com/sports scoreboard as they become available.
