IDAHO FALLS — One man is dead following a single-vehicle crash that happened Thursday morning in Idaho Falls.

At 2:15 a.m., the Idaho Falls Bonneville County Emergency Communications Center received multiple reports of a car crash on Fremont Avenue under the U.S. Highway 20 overpass.

Callers said the car was on fire, according to an Idaho Falls Police Department news release.

First responders found a 2014 Dodge Charger with a man inside. The vehicle had major damage, and a large sign had fallen on the road.

Idaho Falls Fire crews extinguished the fire and extricated him out of the vehicle. He was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, where he later died.

Through investigation, police officers determined the Charger had been traveling south on Fremont Avenue, according to the release.

“The vehicle went up onto the median, struck a large signpost and then continued into a support pillar for the Highway 20 overpass, ultimately stopping in the northbound lanes,” police said.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, the investigation revealed.

The sign, the car and debris blocked both directions of travel. The road was closed for several hours and reopened at 8:45 a.m.

The man’s name and age were not released.
