BONNEVILLE COUNTY — A 17-year-old has died after a vehicle he was in went into a canal over the weekend.

On Sunday at 8:45 p.m., a caller reported a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 145th North (North County Line Road) and 115th East. The car was reported submerged in the adjacent canal.

The Bonneville and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Offices responded along with Central Fire Department and Idaho Falls Ambulance.

Deputies trained in water and dive rescue were able to extricate two kids, ages 17 and 12, from the vehicle, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Both of them were taken by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center where the 17-year-old died. The 12-year-old remains in the hospital as of Monday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

“Deputies determined the juveniles were attempting to turn east from the Jefferson County side of the intersection (4500 East) onto 145th North (North County Line Road) and failed to yield to a pickup pulling a boat that was westbound on 145th North,” deputies said.

The car, a Chevy Malibu, was hit on the driver’s side and went off the roadway and into the canal.

The investigation is ongoing.
