IDAHO FALLS — Alturas Preparatory Academy is thrilled to present Big Fish, a magical and heartwarming musical, at the Colonial Theater on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 20, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available for just $5.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Daniel Wallace and the beloved Tim Burton film, “Big Fish” tells the story of Edward Bloom, a man whose life is filled with extraordinary adventures involving witches, giants, and mermaids. But as Edward’s health begins to decline, his adult son Will seeks the truth behind his father’s fantastical tales.

As Will grapples with his father’s larger-than-life stories, he embarks on a journey to uncover Edward’s “true” life and comes to understand the deeper meaning behind the stories that bind their family.

With stunning music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a witty, emotionally resonant book by John August, “Big Fish” explores themes of love, family, and identity, wrapped in a beautiful, fantastical package.

“‘Big Fish’ is not just a musical about adventure, it’s about the stories we tell to understand ourselves and the people we love,” said director Stevie Crofts. “We are so proud of the incredible work our students have done to bring this larger-than-life tale to the stage. It’s a story that’s both wildly imaginative and deeply emotional.”

Over 40 talented students from Alturas Preparatory Academy have come together to present this visually stunning and emotionally powerful production. The cast has dedicated themselves to bringing the enchanting world of “Big Fish” to life, with a mix of humor, drama, and unforgettable music.

Collin Talbot, 16, who plays the lead role of Edward Bloom, shared, “Playing Edward Bloom has really helped me think about what’s truly important in life, and that’s family. That’s how I feel about my fellow castmates—they’ve become like family to me. It has been so moving to see them become emotional during the scene where my character’s health declines at the end of the show.”

Sadie Lago, 14, who plays Sandra, Edward’s wife, said, “I’ve loved seeing my fellow students’ characters and talents grow. The energy of the show is contagious, and working together as a team has been so fulfilling. Being coached by Stevie Crofts has really helped me develop my acting skills, and I’ve grown so much from this opportunity.”

Kipling Hummel, 16, who plays Karl the Giant, commented, “I love playing the role of Karl. He’s tall and intimidating, but he has a tender side, too. Working with my fellow students has been such a fun experience—it’s truly what high school memories are made of.”

Tanner Duffin, 13, who plays Will, Edward’s son, shared, “As I’ve been preparing for my role as Will, I’ve been amazed by the collaboration of our group to bring such a serious musical to life. I recently lost my grandmother to cancer, and she’s been in my heart while playing this role. I hope to pay tribute to her, and to all those who have lost loved ones too soon.”

This magical, heartfelt production is not to be missed, filled with stunning music, unforgettable performances, and a story that will leave audiences laughing, crying, and reflecting on the power of storytelling.
