FIRTH — Firth’s standout runner Kynzie Nielson signed a letter of intent Tuesday with Weber State University.

Nielson has earned dozens of accolades during her career, including being a 14-time district champion in track and field and cross country.

She’s been among the top runners in her division, finishing runner-up at state cross country, as well as the 1,600 and the 3,200 during spring track season. She was also part of a state champion 4×400 relay team.

Nielson also boasts several cross country and track school records, including a time of 18:42 in cross country, a 1,600 school record of 5:22, and an 800 school record of 2:20.

She’s led the Cougars to two state team trophies, and three district championships, including last year when her track team finished second at the State Track and Field Championships.

Coach Bob Lambert noted Nielson looks to improve on those school records during the upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Nielson, a 4.0 student. is interested in studying speech language pathology in college.

“Outside of the medals, and MVPs Kynzie has won, she also changed the culture of our program and the culture of our school,” Lambert said. “Kynzie’s made running cool again at Firth, and her impact will go well beyond the years she spent here training, because she cared not just about her own success, but about her teammates’ and her teams’ success as well. We will miss her greatly.”
