Frontier Foundation raises funds for new shoes for local children

IDAHO FALLS — As the weather gets chillier, quality shoes are more important than ever. To make sure no child goes without good shoes, Frontier Foundation is kicking off the annual Coins for Christmas initiative.
Since 1987, the Frontier Foundation has been raising money for new shoes for less fortunate children in Idaho, while also teaching children the value of giving. Each year, schools compete to collect the most coins to support other children in their local communities. For every dollar donated, Frontier Foundation will match up to a set amount.
“It’s a way of providing the Christmas spirit for everybody, no matter if it’s a penny to five dollars,” said Frontier Foundation President Alicia Jones.
Schools and businesses from the Treasure Valley to Salmon to Pocatello participate in the fundraiser.
Frontier Foundation works with school counselors and counseling agencies to point people in need to Coins for Christmas. Those who need shoes receive a form to fill out, and then Frontier Foundation sends them a voucher from Shoe Depot.
“They can choose whatever shoes that they want to. They can choose what colors, what style, any of those,” Jones said.
So far this year, Frontier Foundation has given out $40,000 through Coins for Christmas, which covers 800 shoes.
“Coins for Christmas is more than just a holiday drive—it’s a reminder of the strength of community and the power of giving back,” Jones said. “This program embodies the spirit of Christmas by helping local families experience the joy and warmth of the season, no matter their circumstances. We’re proud to be able to make a meaningful impact in our communities.”
