Secret Santa has a surprise for a mom, dad, son and daughter who have all experienced awful events

A local Secret Santa is giving $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season and the East Idaho News elves are helping out.

Every day, from now until the end of the year, we’ll be posting a Secret Santa surprise and today we’re visiting a teacher named Susan.

In July, she went in for a procedure and the doctor found a huge mass. Susan went in for emergency surgery where she had nine inches of her colon removed. When she woke up, Susan had no idea what had happened. It turned out to be non-cancerous; however, the recovery from the surgery has been extremely difficult.

Several weeks later, Susan’s husband Bryce was at work in Island Park and fell. He was taken by ambulance to EIRMC and learned he had broken five vertebrates in his neck, ribs and bones in his back. His recovery has been really painful. This means he can no longer work or fulfill his military duties in the Army Serves for an unknown amount of time.

Susan has now gone back to work as a school teacher for Madison School District. Several weeks after the fall, their oldest son, on a mission in Africa, got a blood infection that turned into sepsis. This was terrifying since they can not see or help him. Fortunately, he has recovered.

Finally, a few weeks ago their daughter was playing volleyball. She went up to spike the ball and when landing, her knee gave out. She tore her meniscus, ACL, and MCL. She will have surgery this upcoming week.

Susan and her family are strong people who try to remain positive. They always tell people they are good and someone out there has it worse.

Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to track Susan down and surprise her with a Christmas gift. Check out the video in the player above!
