Ashton Jeanty is Boise State’s first unanimous All-American, adding to his accolades
Published atBOISE (Idaho Statesman) — The accolades just keep rushing in for Boise State star Ashton Jeanty.
On the heels of a runner-up finish in the Heisman Trophy voting over the weekend, Jeanty became the first Boise State football player this week to be named a unanimous pick on the All-America team, voted on by The Associated Press.
Jeanty, the nation’s leading rusher, also was a unanimous All-American, having been a first-team pick in voting from the American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Former Boise State offensive linemen Ryan Clady (2007) and Nate Potter (2011) were both consensus All-Americans, which requires first-team recognition by at least half the selectors.
Jeanty’s standout season has helped propel Boise State to its first College Football Playoff berth. The No. 3-seed Broncos will face the winner of a game between No. 6 Penn State and No. 11 SMU in the Fiesta Bowl at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 (ESPN).
The Nittany Lions and Mustangs play Saturday at 10 a.m. Mountain time.
In 13 games for the Broncos (12-1), Jeanty has rushed for 2,497 yards, which ranks fourth in FBS single-season history. His 29 rushing touchdowns are tied for first in the country, and he also leads the nation in all-purpose yards (2,613), first downs (121) and points (180).
He is closing in on Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record, needing only 132 yards in the Fiesta Bowl to top it. Perhaps even more impressive is Jeanty’s 1,889 yards after contact, which is a CFP-era single-season record. He also has forced 143 missed tackles and has a Pro Football Focus rushing grade of 97.5, another CFP-era record.
