Wrong-way driver crashes into car on US 20 in Madison County

On Friday, Dec. 20, at approximately 04:50 a.m., Madison County Dispatch received calls of a wrong-way driver in a white 2021 GMC Sierra pickup truck, headed southbound in the northbound lanes of travel on US Highway 20 at approximately milepost 333.
Deputies were able to locate and attempted to stop the vehicle near milepost 328. A deputy with his emergency lights was actively attempting to block the road at approximately milepost 328 when the driver of the GMC drove around the deputy and crashed head-on into a 2018 Toyota Rav 4 that was a short ways behind the deputy’s vehicle.
Madison Fire and Ambulance responded to the scene and both were transported by ambulance. The driver of the Rav 4 was transported to EIRMC with what are considered serious injuries. The driver of the GMC was transported to Madison Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The driver of the GMC – Joseph Schultz of Rexburg – will be charged with felony DUI and booked into the Madison County Jail once he is cleared by medical staff and released from the hospital.
Further information may be released at a later date and time. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
