Local sheriff issues statement about ICE conducting deportation ‘raids’

The following is a statement from Blaine County Sheriff Morgan Ballis.

I want to take this opportunity to address recent rumors regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducting deportation operations within Blaine County, Idaho.

Historically, ICE has directly communicated with the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) when carrying out actions in our jurisdiction. This practice aligns with law enforcement’s best practices to ensure public and officer safety. Since taking office on Jan. 13, BCSO has not received any communication from ICE regarding deportation operations in Blaine County.

In the past three weeks, multiple rumors have circulated about ICE conducting “raids” in the area. On Jan. 29, specific claims alleged that ICE was stationed outside public businesses, “rounding up illegal immigrants.” These claims were completely unsubstantiated, with no evidence to support them. BCSO directly contacted ICE, who confirmed that no such operations had taken place in Blaine County, Idaho during this time.

Unfortunately, bad actors often spread misinformation about deportation operations to create fear and manipulate vulnerable individuals. This tactic not only incites panic but also discourages victims from seeking help or cooperating with law enforcement.

The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting all members of our community, regardless of immigration status. We will not allow fearmongering to undermine the trust we have built. We urge the public to help combat these harmful tactics by verifying information before sharing it.

Together, we will ensure a safer, more informed community.
