Taylor’s Crossing overcomes potent tandem of Sequints, Cree Medicine to beat Sho-Ban in OT

FORT HALL — On senior night, the Sho-Ban Chiefs got monster performances from senior and emotional leader Bam Sequints and sophomore phenom Sky Cree Medicine.

But the dynamic duo could not provide enough punch to overcome the late-game heroics of Taylor’s Crossing’s Sergio Salinas, as the Eagles (10-6, 4-4) came away with a 74-72 overtime victory at Sho-Ban (8-7, 3-5), Thursday.

Cree Medicine finished the night with 22 points, 25 rebounds and three blocks, before fouling out in the overtime period. Sequints posted a game-high 27 points, to go with 14 rebounds and three steals. He also fouled out during extra time. As did a trio of Eagles.

And after 35 minutes and 56 seconds of back-and-forth fury, things were tied with four seconds remaining. Taylor’s Crossing had the ball, following a dead ball turnover by Sho-Ban sophomore Kezo Coby, but Isaiah Ellis misfired on a corner 3. With the rebounding prowess of both Sequints and Cree Medicine, it was Salinas who was able to wrangle the rebound and put home the putback game-winner as the buzzer sounded.

“They played excellent tonight,” Sho-Ban head coach Pam Coby said of her team. … “This team has come a long way.”

Coby’s team is one that relies heavily on contributions from underclassman. They start three sophomores, including Cree Medicine, who, according to Coby, is playing his first year of basketball. But, being a naturally gifted athlete standing roughly 6-foot-2, he plays well beyond his years. And as a Indian Relay rider, he is not afraid of the contact that comes with playing in the paint.

The youngster got involved early and often, snagging rebounds and blocking shots from the opening tip. But he was largely uncontrolled when attacking the rim early, resulting in a slow offensive start

He did eventually control his offensive aggression and began to score, at times, with ease against an Eagles squad that did not have an answer for the height at which he was playing.

Like everyone a home white uniform, Cree Medicine also struggled from the free throw line. Coby estimated that her team made just 20% of its free throw attempts.

“I didn’t think I would have anything to worry about, because when we do our free throws (at practice), they make all of them,” Coby said.

Free throws will be an emphasis at practice next week, she said, saying those misses were all that stood between her team and a much-needed win.

Sequints also struggled at the charity stripe, but he couldn’t miss from anywhere else.

The senior led the charge in the third quarter, when the Chiefs came roaring back from a nine-point halftime deficit.

Behind Sequints and Cree Medicine, Sho-Ban took a four point lead, 57-53, at the midway point of the fourth quarter. But turnovers and missed free throws continued to plague the scrappy Chiefs.

And when they needed it, the Eagles got big baskets from Salinas, Ellis and Brody Stosich, including a game-tying 3-pointer from Salinas in the closing seconds of regulation.

Ellis finished the night with 22 points, two rebounds and three steals. Stosich added 13 points, five rebounds, six steals and a huge block at the end of regulation to turn Sequints away on an attempted game-winner. Stosich would foul out in overtime.

Salinas, who played most of the fourth quarter and overtime with four fouls, was around to play the hero at the end of a four-minute extra period that went back and forth and never saw a team lead by more than four. He finished the night with a team-high 23 points, to go with six rebounds and one steal.

In addition to free throw shooting, Coby said her team will continue to work on the defensive side of the ball, where she has already seen considerable improvement.

“We’re coming down to the last week (of games), then after that it’s districts, so we’re just trying to get ready for the pressure that we’re going to have to deal with,” she said.

Sho-Ban will finish it’s regular season when it hosts Grace Lutheran on Feb. 6. Taylor’s Crossing is back in action Friday, at Clark County.
