SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KSL.com) — Police have issued an Amber Alert in the search for a baby believed to have been abducted by her mother in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City on Friday.
Salt Lake City police were notified by the Utah Division of Child and Family Services that a judge had ordered 32-year-old Holly Angelina Smith to surrender custody of her daughter, police said in a news release.
Police issued the alert for 18-month-old Josephina Jimenez because she was “unlawfully taken by her mother, Holly Angelina Smith, in violation of a court order to surrender custody.”
Salt Lake police are now searching for Smith, who is white, 5-foot-4, weighs 100 pounds, and has short brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing black Adidas pants, a light-colored sweater and blue Vans sneakers, according to the alert.
“Detectives have reason to believe family members may be assisting Holly Angelina Smith in avoiding law enforcement. Based on information provided by the state, the following concerns led to the court order for removal: environmental neglect, physical neglect, concerns about substance use and abuse, a history of child removal and past violations of a DCFS safety plan,” the statement from police said.
Josephina Jimenez, 1, weighs 23 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a brown onesie, police said.
Smith and her daughter were last seen in the area of 1801 S. 900 West. Their current location is unknown, but police believe Smith may be on foot with her daughter.
“There are unconfirmed reports that she may have been dropped off near 1300 South near the Jordan River Trail,” police said.
Anyone with information should call 911.
